Located just a short distance from our hotel in Florence, the Uffizi Gallery is one of the most famous museums in the world for its extraordinary collection of paintings and ancient statues. Its collections of paintings from the fourteenth century and the Renaissance contain some of the world's best-known masterpieces. Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Beato Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Caravaggio are just some of the Italian artists on display. The museum also has a vast collection of German, Dutch and Flemish masters. Among these: Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens.
A unique gallery
The Gallery is located on the top floor of the large building designed by Giorgio Vasari. It was founded by Grand-Duke Francesco I and subsequently added to by the Medici family. The collection was rearranged and expanded by the Lorraine dynasty, who succeeded the Medici, and finally by the Italian State. The Contini Bonacossi collection and the Prints and Drawings of the Uffizi are also on display.
The Vasari Corridor, built by Vasari in 1565, connects the museum to the famous Palazzo Vecchio and Pitti. Works from rhe seventeeth century are on display there, as is the Self-Portrait collection.
