The exhibition Bill Viola. Electronic Renaissance is at Palazzo Strozzi from 10th March to 23rd July, 2017. Bill Viola is a master of contemporary video art. The exhibition takes place in a single path between the main floor and the Strozzina, showing the career of this artist, from the first experiments of the seventies up to large installations subsequent to the new millennium.

At the centre of the Viola’s survey there is humanity: people, bodies, faces are the protagonists of his works, characterized by a poetic and highly symbolic style in which man is called to interact with the forces and the energies of nature as water and fire, between light and dark, the cycle of life and that of rebirth.
In the Renaissance setting of Palazzo Strozzi it is created above all an extraordinary dialogue between ancient and contemporary through an unprecedented, direct confrontation of the Viola’s works with those masterpieces of the great masters of the past who have been for him a source of inspiration and have marked the evolution of language.
So, it is celebrated the special relationship between Bill Viola and Florence. In fact, it is here that the artist began his career in the field of video art when, between 1974 and ’76, it was technical director of art / tapes / 22, a centre of production and video documentation. The relationship of Viola with history and art is also enhanced through important collaborations with museums and institutions such as the Grande Museo del Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery and the Museum of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, but also with the towns of Empoli and Arezzo.
