Exhibition Freedom Fighters – The Kennedys and the Struggle for Civil Rights is currently in program at the headquarters of the Robert F. Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights Europe located in Via Ghibellina. It is an important and fascinating project that will keep us company until Thursday, 15th May, curated by the Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia e Contrasto in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States of America. The exhibition Freedom Fighters in Florence retraces, through the exhibition of eighty photographs, the challenging and difficult battle for civil rights in the U.S., witnessing the difficulties inherent in it and the vital role played by the Kennedy family.
Exhibition Freedom Fighters in Florence, our history
The exhibition Freedom Fighters in Florence is divided into two sections. The first retraces chronically the dates, facts, characters and most important events in the battle for civil rights. So, it is in this section that we find pictures of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Photos, texts and videos, which define a narrative that starts from 1776, the year in which the Committee of Five present to Congress the draft of the Declaration of Independence and arrives until 1964, the year of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Martin Luther King. The exhibition Freedom Fighters in Florence continues with the second section, characterized by large-format photographs, intent on capturing gestures and icons symbol of the struggle. And it is here that we find pictures that remind us the racial segregation of the ‘50s, the riots in Birmingham, the movement of the Freedom Fighters, the march on Washington or the daily activities conducted by Kennedy.
