What to visit in Florence during the FAI Spring days
On Saturday 25 and on Sunday 26 March 2017 it comes back the appointment with the FAI Spring days also in Florence. During this extraordinary event now in its 25th edition, around 1,000 locations throughout Italy will be opened by FAI (Italian Environment Fund) volunteers, with a free contribution visits.
FAI Spring days in Florence: the places to visit
In occasion of these special spring days in Florence it will be opened exceptionally five places of culture.
The following sites will be opened during FAI Spring days from 10 a.m. to 16.30 (contribution starting from 3 Euros):
- Cimitero Agli Allori: the cemetery, with an evangelical rite, hosts to the graves of fifty nationalities and thirty different religions, among which that of Oriana Fallaci, Leonardo Savioli, Frederick Stibbert and many other personalities. It is in via Senese, 184 in Florence;
- Cimitero degli Inglesi in Piazzale Donatello, 38 in Florence: so called because of the prevalence of Britons graves, it was redesigned in its present style by Giuseppe Poggi during the construction of Piazza Donatello. Many famous characters are buried there, such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Giovan Pietro Vieusseux, but it is the presence of statues, the irregular arrangement of the burials, the layout of the paths and the various tree species to make picturesque the cemetery and representative of the romantic nineteenth century that combined the picturesque with the medieval and Renaissance history of Florence;
- Ex Convent of the Oblate Franciscan Hospitaller of Monna Tessa: inside the church and the sala del capitolo are exposed a Crucifix by Giuliano da Sangallo and a tabernacle of Dello Delli (both of the 15th century), the board of the Assumption of Mary and the Saints and the fresco with the Last Supper by Matteo Rossel (17th century). - Palazzo Valori Altoviti in Borgo degli Albizi, 18, in Florence: the palace, called “dei Visacci” for portraits of famous Florentine people carved in the facade, dates back to the first half of the 16th century, when the young Baccio Valori expanded the fifteenth-century mansion of Rinaldo degli Albizi and redesigned the prospectus by the architect and sculptor Giovanni Battista Caccini. Subsequent extension and decoration works were made in 1687 and in 1727 when the property passed first to the Guicciardini and then to the Altoviti. Since 1978, the main floor is home of the Florentine Masonic lodge of the Grande Oriente d’Italia. The visits to the Directional centre are reserved for FAI members, with departures every hour from 11 to 17 (maximum 20 persons per group):
- Ex-Tobacco Factory in via delle Cascine, 33 in Florence: an exquisite expression of the Florentine rationalism.
