From July 3rd to December 9th, 2012 arrives the Native Americans art exhibition in Florence at Pitti Palace: The New Frontier. History and culture of Native Americans from the collections of the Gilcrease Museum. The event will take place in the Andito degli Angiolini and Costume Gallery of Pitti Palace for the fifth centenary of the death of Amerigo Vespucci, one of the discoverers of the America who was born in Florence in 1454. The Native Americans art exhibition in Florence from the collection of the Gilcrease Museum
The exhibition, dedicated to the civilization of the indigenous people of North America, was set up in collaboration with the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which displays a rich collection of handmade art and crafts on the history of the American West. The exhibition, which takes place in Florence, will present a selection of the most valuable pieces of American museum. In the Andito degli Angiolini will be present a historical section which shows the various stages of the discovery of America and its colonization, a map with the settlements of the native tribes before and after the exodus from their lands, the social organization of tribes, contamination of Indian culture with that of West and photos of the early XX century by Edward Curtis, who documented the culture of Native Americans at risk of extinction. In the Costume Gallery, you will admire the eighteenth-century fresco by Anton Domenico Gabbiani of Amerigo Vespucci next to Galileo Galilei, various Indigenous Nations artifacts, paintings, sculptures and photographs of the XVIII and XIX centuries by artists who were in contact with the natives, among these, Joseph Henry Sharp, with the masterpiece of the exhibition present in the ballroom of the Gallery: Crucita, a girl of Taos.
