In the fantastic opera of “The Barber of Seville”, history, art and genius intertwine inexorably. These are the basic ingredients of the great opera buffa by Gioacchino Rossini. This triumph was staged for the first time on 20 February 1816, at the Teatro Argentina in Rome, receiving only boos, however. The pièce that later would become one of the symbols of national artistic greatness was based on the French comedy “Le barbier de Séville ou la précaution inutile” by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. The original title of the opera in two acts was “Almaviva” or “The Futile Precaution”, a mixture of spoken play with music of the genius from Pesaro and with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini.
