The nineteen paintings in the exhibition come from the Medici collections. They tell stories of places and characters that have enriched the collection of the XVI and XVII centuries. The monumental Hercules and the Hydra of Lerna performed by Guido Reni and the two paintings with Tarquin and Lucretia by Simon Pignoni are the centerpiece of the exhibition devoted to the Myth. To the Sacred instead, it is dedicated the section of the Sacred Stories with subjects of the Old and New Testament by Flemish and Italian artists: Frans Floris, Artemisia Gentileschi and Jacopo Ligozzi. Then, there is a tribute to Don Lorenzo de’ Medici, a great patron series of ovals with Ila, Zephyr, the Youth in a Blue Doublet and the Allegory of Comedy and the large canvas with Orlando in the Brigands’ Cave. Finally, the section devoted to portraits exhibited five paintings by Gastone d’Orleans, Enrichetta Maria, and Elisabetta, younger sons of Maria de’ Medici and Henry IV of France, and even the portraits of Cosimo III de’ Medici and Margherita de’ Medici.
