Born in the 1st century BC as a settlement for the roman veterans, Florence knew a great development during the Middle Ages that unfortunately covered the traces of the roman society. At the end of the 2nd millennium, the development of the river port allowed Florence to become an important player on the European market: thanks to the great income of wealth and capitals, the city became also one of the most important centres for banking.

In the beginning of the 12th century, the rivalry between Guelfi and Ghibellini grew stronger: these two parties characterized the political life in Florence and were the main characters of some episodes reported in Dante’s Divina Commedia.

After a period of crisis between the XIV and XV centuries, caused by the terrible combination of the Hundred Years’ War and the Black Death, Florence knew an incredible moment of artistic and cultural development: the Renaissance.

During this phase, thanks to the Medici Family being very fond of arts, the Republic of Florence hosted some of the most important artists whose creations stood the test of time and are still amongst the most famous in the world: the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, the Giotto’s Campanile, Palazzo Vecchio, the Birth of Venues and the David ore only some of the wonders that adorn Florence.

In 1861, the whole Tuscany become part of the Kingdom of Italy and in 1865 Florence took the place of Turin as capital.

Thanks to the incredible artistical and cultural richness, Florence became one of the most visited city in the world in the 20th century: its wonders, its history and its atmosphere made Florence one of the capitals of the art world.
