Guide to the Accademia Gallery in Florence

The Accademia Gallery in Florence is a museum of great importance inside the city, located in Via Ricasoli. Founded as a gallery to accompany the ancient “Academy of Fine Arts”, it is now a piece of the Museums of Florence which, in its entirety, provides visitors works of inestimable value. Certainly is not outdone the Accademia Gallery in Florence, rich in works of various kinds, and which owes its fame to the famous David by Michelangelo.

It is divided into twelve different environments, divided into rooms, galleries, forums and plaster-cast museums, custodians, starting since 1784 of some of the greatest masterpieces of Italian artists from convents, monasteries and other religious institutions.

The Accademia Gallery in Florence has also two adjacent rooms, which have arisen from those who were once the ancient monasteries, and which still today contain works of art from the “Academy of the Arts of Drawing” and the “Academy of Fine Arts”.

In the whole structure are preserved the religious paintings made by the biggest artists working in and around Florence, encompassing a period from the second half of the 13th century to the late 16th century. In the Accademia Gallery in Florence you can admire works by Michelangelo, as the “Prisoners” and “Saint Matthew”, or works by Giambologna, Perugino, Filippino Lippi, Jacopo del Sellaio, Sandro Botticelli, Pontormo, Daniele da Volterra, Lorenzo Bartolini, Giotto, Luigi Pampaloni and many other members of the national art history.

Among the most interesting works inside the Accademia Gallery in Florence we mention a collection of boards with a gold background, unique in the world, the late Gothic altarpieces, the plaster casts of nineteenth-century by sculptors Lorenzo Bartolini and Luigi Pampaloni, besides a remarkable collection of Russian icons. In the gallery, there is also the Museum of Musical Instruments, with instruments belonging to the Conservatory Luigi Cherubini.

It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 08:15 to 18:50 hours. Closed on Mondays, on Christmas Day and New Year’s.
