The Florence Biennale reaches its 14th edition this year, and it will be held from Saturday 14 to Sunday 22 October 2023 at Fortezza da Basso. One of the special features of this eagerly awaited event is that it is among the few international events dedicated to contemporary art that are truly self-financed and independent, where artists actually get to live an aggregating and unique experience. The International Biennial was founded in 1997 and, among other things, it awards the prestigious “Lorenzo il Magnifico“, a lifetime achievement award in collaboration with the city of Florence, to personalities who have particularly distinguished themselves in the world of art, design and culture.

The theme of this year’s International Biennial is based on the concepts of individual and collective identities, in their multiple philosophical, psychological, sociological and cultural meanings. On the one hand, the concept of identity can be associated with the characteristics that distinguish us from others as unique and unrepeatable individuals (think of our biographical data and genetic makeup). On the other, identity is linked to the need to belong to one or more groups (or communities) that helps define how we are perceived by ourselves and others.

Numerous artists from more than 60 countries engaged in different forms of visual artistic expression are expected: painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, installations, video art, digital art, mixed media but also textiles and fibers, jewelry and ceramics.

We invite you to participate in the rich program of events: lectures, side exhibitions, performances and educational meetings with opportunities for discussion on the themes of art and culture.

The program of the Florence Biennale 2023 is not yet available online.

Fortezza da Basso, home of the International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Florence is also within walking distance of the city’s historic center.
