International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Florence

June 28, 2021
florence biennale

The Florence Biennale reaches its 13th edition this year, and it will be held from Friday 22 to Sunday 31 October 2021

at Fortezza da Basso. One of the peculiarities of this long awaited event is to be one of the few international events dedicated to contemporary art that is truly self-financed and independent, where artists are actually able to live a unifying and unique experience. The International Biennale was founded in 1997 and, among other things, assigns the prestigious award, in collaboration with the city of Florence, “Lorenzo the Magnificent”, a career award, aimed at personalities who have particularly distinguished themselves in the world of art, design and culture.

The theme of this year’s International Biennial is “Eternal Feminine Eternal Change” with emphasis on the concept of femininity in contemporary art and design.

It investigates two aspects of femininity: on the one hand its immutable essence that has inspired artistic creations of all times and, on the other, the changes that have affected and still affect the contemporary world under the pressure of social and cultural movements developed around feminisms and to LGBTQ communities.

All the new stimuli have led to the redefinition of the concept of femininity, further expanding its complexity and multidimensionality.

The theme of the 2021 Florence Biennale opens up precisely to the plurality of points of view of artists and designers.

Numerous artists are expected from more than 60 countries involved in various forms of visual artistic expression: painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, installations, video art, digital art, mixed media but also textiles and fibres, jewellery and ceramics.

We invite you to participate in the rich program of events: conferences, side exhibitions, performances and educational meetings with opportunities for discussion on the themes of art and culture.

The 2021 Florence Biennale program is not yet available online.

Fortezza da Basso, home to the International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Florence, can also be reached on foot from the historic city centre.
