The Immaculate Conception, on 8 December, officially starts the countdown to Christmas, which is inaugurated by turning on the lights of the traditional Christmas tree, a fir about 10 meters high, generally decorated with white lights and coloured lilies.
The Christmas tree is positioned in the extraordinary setting of Piazza del Duomo, where the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Baptistery of San Giovanni stand in all their Renaissance beauty.
At Christmas, on the churchyard of the Florence Cathedral they also set up the traditional Nativity scene, featuring terracotta statues depicting the Holy Family: the nativity scene is placed near the Christmas tree and remains there until Epiphany.
